In the Age of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the Role Youth Play

The world is being transformed by technology and innovation. As society progresses, we find more and more ways to ameliorate and advance our technology to execute actions that we as humans find tedious and tiring. Through the growth of the digital age, we have used technology to advance in transportation, information services, communications, media, networking, data analysis, and other human activities and processes. It is important to understand the different levels of Artificial Intelligence (AI). First, Artificial Narrow Intelligence is an automaton that specializes in one specific area. Artificial Narrow Intelligence, or Weak AI, executes the simple tasks that were stated above (communications, analysis, media, etc.) Products like Google Search and calendaring softwares are examples of Artificial Narrow Intelligence. The second category of AI, Artificial General Intelligence is a much more sophisticated technology innovation whereby computer programs can in effect have the same “intelligence” as humans do. These programs and applications have the ability to calculate, analyze, reason, and perform abstract creative ideas as if “human”. As time and technology advances, we anticipate, in the very short term, that AI will accomplish these tasks, surpassing human capability and capacity.

As a young person or the parent of a teenager, you may be asking yourself, why is AI so important? What is it all about and why should I care? Artificial Intelligence is incredibly important because as a transformational technology innovation, AI allows creative and driven innovators to find new ways to execute activities, perform tasks and do a job with increased proficiency and accuracy. We know that our youth have the potential to transform the future of technology. Today’s youth have been practically raised in a generation designed by and for technology. They are immersed in technology every day. The Gen Z and Millennial generations are shaping the way we use technology on an advanced level and at an accelerated pace. They can transport our assets with complex cryptography through the power of blockchain and bitcoin. They can construct self-driving cars and create more advanced computer versions of Deep Blue and IBM’s Watson.

As parents we should embrace, or at the bare minimum, begin to learn more about the impact that Artificial Intelligence can bring to the world, and how our children will be influenced by this technology transformation. Our Gen Zers have the skills and capacity to manipulate computers and applications into this advanced, hyperintelligent technology. It’s been proven in many ways that AI and advanced technologies can improve our health, financial systems, agriculture, engineering, transportation, and education.

This constant and rapid change through technology is the “new normal” and will only accelerate. Advanced technology has fundamentally transformed industry and society and in most cases is exponentially guiding us to a brighter future. Legacy industries and companies are being disrupted right before our eyes, creating massive societal, economic and business opportunities for both active and passive participants.

So how should Generation Z take advantage of these massive changes? As mentioned in previous blogs, young kids, teenagers and young adults should learn and master coding as a key part of their talent stack. Coding is the language of the future and when implemented in practice has been proven to improve problem solving skills and communications. Youth should also learn more about AI so they can leverage this innovation along with their own business ideas to change and better their communities and the world. As previously stated, the world is transforming and our youth will play a major role in shaping our future.
